Pre-Surgical Rehabilitation

Physical Therapy is extremely beneficial before a surgery. Numerus case studies and clinical evidence indicates that pre-operative physical therapy leads to better outcomes and faster recovery after surgery.

Pre-surgical physical therapy helps regain range of motion, reduce swelling, increase strength and your ability to weight bear on an injured limb. This leads to faster recover in range of motion and strength with less pain after the surgery. We have muscle memory to thank for this. When you train your muscles and joints to work a certain way before surgery, muscle memory kicks in post surgically so you recover faster.

At Physis, we have helped numerous patients’ prep/condition their muscles for the surgery. A thorough analysis of strength and function help us reach a definitive diagnosis. Treatment is focused on correcting movements and functional patterns resulting in pain reduction and improved function. Some patients have also, surprisingly, managed to avoid surgery, altogether. We would highly recommend for you to come in for an evaluation and see if you can also avoid surgery.

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

Physical Therapy after surgery is critical in regaining range of motion, reducing swelling, abolishing scar tissue, promoting healing through active movements, improve weight bearing and regaining strength to ultimately return to functional activities. Your body is already dealing with the trauma of the injury and now it also deals with the trauma of undergoing a surgery. Rehabilitation after surgery is critical to reach your post-operative goals, which is the main reason you underwent the surgery in the first place.

Post-Surgical Goals

1. To decrease pain

2. To decrease swelling

3. To increase Joint ROM

4. To improve joint stiffness and tightness

5. To release scar

6. To increase strength

7. To improve functional ADL’s

8. To improve weight bearing

9. To correct gait pattern.

10. To train functional ADL’s or sports specific training depending upon demand of the activities required.
